What is Black Mold and Why is it So Dangerous?

Not all varieties of mold in the home are toxic, but black mold is one type that warrants serious professional attention. Mold is simply another word for fungi that occurs naturally in literally thousands of different varieties. Only a relative few are toxic to humans and black mold tops the list of “usual suspects” when mold contamination affects the interior of a home and the health of its occupants. There’s plenty of evidence against black mold: long-term exposure is associated with a spectrum of symptoms including allergic reactions like hay fever, asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, dizziness and even depression.

What Is Black Mold?

The formal name is Stachybotrys chartarum. This type of mold is particularly adapted to growing inside structures when minimal requirements of moisture and food are available.

Is Black Mold Black?

Often, it is not. In fact, black mold may be closer to green in color or appear in various shades of brown, as well. However, other types of harmless molds assume this same coloration, too, so suspected black mold infection inside a house can only be confirmed by a mold remediation specialist who will test direct samples.

What’s So Toxic About Black Mold?

Like all mold, active black mold releases millions of microscopic airborne reproductive spores. These invisible particles accumulate in the enclosed environment of a home to levels one would never encounter in the great outdoors. However, black mold spores carry chemicals called mycotoxins that are known to be toxic to humans when inhaled.

What Can I Do About Black Mold?

Successfully treating black mold in the home is not a DIY project. A qualified mold remediation specialist can inspect the growth to for black mold and have the spore count in the air tested to determine the extent of the contamination. After physical removal of the primary growth, he’ll utilize anti-microbial products specifically formulated for the type of black mold to sterilize surfaces and prevent recurrence. In follow-up visits, air samples will be taken to confirm successful remediation. For a professional approach to diagnosing and treating black mold in the home, contact Rytech.

Mold so bad you could smell it in Crawfordville Fl 32327

Our Rytech technician arrived at our homeowners residence on March 10, 2021. He found visible water damage, but no elevated moisture readings. There were lots of stains on the drywall ceiling and a noticeable smell – a heavy odor of microbial (mold) growth throughout the home.

Following the Rytech protocols. we set up the recommended mold remediation equipment before starting our work in the kitchen. The affected wall cabinets were removed for treatment. Rytech cleaned the area and salvaged appliances. All appliances were cleaned and wrapped in plastic to eliminate cross contamination from the remainder of the mold remediation work to be done in the home.

The same procedures were applied to the laundry room for the washer and dryer as the ceiling in the laundry room needed to be removed, cleaned, treated and contained for mold growth too.

The dining room also required removal of the affected wall and ceiling drywall before treating cleaning and containment

The master bathroom was almost fully gutted with the removal of the vanity, tub, shower, sink and and toilet. All of this work led to opening up the wall inside the master closet, where thick mold growth was present. Unfortunately, the master closet was also fully gutted to assure the removal of all of the mold contaminants.

This mold remediation job was large and, some would consider, extreme. But, for Rytech it was another days work and easily remediated. Rytech worked seamlessly with the customer’s insurance company, Tower Hill, to ensure all parties were completely satisfied and to get the home owner one step closer to living in a healthy, mold free home.

UnFitted bath tub leads to a major mold problem in Tallahassee FL – 32311

A recent clients bath tub was fitted improperly by Bath Fitters. The improper installation caused on on-going leak from the shower pan. The tub was replaced but the shower pan was not, causing a major mold remediation effort in this home. To fix the mold problem, the baseboards, tub, shower and all drywall needed to be removed from the bathroom. While Bath Fitters fought with Farm Bureau about ‘who was at fault’, Ryech got to work – safely getting rid of all of the mold caused by this botched installation! Farm Bureau went ahead and approved Rytech’s estimate and work. All mold was successfully remediated from the home and the insurance company, Farm Bureau subrogated the claim to Bath Fitters.
