What to Consider When You Need to Hire a Mold Remediation Specialist

Hiring a mold remediation specialist is an unfamiliar process for most homeowners. Many, in fact, have never even considered it. Unlike plumbing or electrical problems, mold contamination is a less common event. Nevertheless, when mold growth suddenly makes hiring a mold remediation specialist critical to your indoor air quality and/or property values, you’ll want to be sure you make the right call.

  • Look for an established outfit with a track record. A professional mold remediation service will have a permanent business address, not just a website or cell phone number, and they will be happy to supply local references.
  • Insist on professional credentials. A valid company should display affiliation with the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) — the recognized industry organization that sets standards for mold remediation, water damage recovery and other property services.
  • Ask about technical training. Mold remediation is an evolving science and technology. Employees should be up to date on the latest techniques through continuing education and certification, such as the IICRC’s Applied Microbe Remediation Technician course.
  • Don’t respond to scary stories. Mold growth in the home is a valid concern on several levels, including health issues to certain susceptible individuals. However, overblown tales of “deadly mold,” as well as exaggerated promises of miracle health effects from mold remediation, should not influence your decision. In fact, these may be taken as a red flag to question the professionalism and integrity of the company.
  • Get test results in writing. Accurate laboratory test results of airborne and surface samples should be provided. Guesstimates made at a glance about suspected contamination aren’t sufficient to confirm mold growth or determine the type.
